A salon may not be what readily comes to mind when people plan family friendly excursions in the RGV. The Salon & Spa Institute in Brownsville is exactly that. “Families should come visit our school because services are offered at a very reasonable price, specifically for families with multiple children,” says Robin Brechot, the spa’s executive director. At only $4.00 per haircut, clients enthusiastically agree.

A cosmetology, aesthetics and instructors school, students service clients while supervised by a teacher. The spa area is in a separate, calming corridor, while the clinic floor bustles with nails and hair being done. Typically, 80’s tunes and musica rock en Español can be heard over the loudspeaker. No stranger to local events that include giving free haircuts and manicures, SSI is open and inviting to the community.

Recently, spa parties for little girls and women alike are becoming popular. Needing at least two weeks notice, the salon can be booked for such special occasions and catered to the specifications of the honoree. The lounge area is used for party food like cake and pizza, and at $15.00 per guest, customers can elect to have manicures, pedicures and their hair curled or flat-ironed. The guest of honor is free.

Open since October of 2006, SSI’s vision includes opening two more schools up the valley, and potentially creating a salon that graduates of the school can work at as a stepping-stone. Brechot remarked, “The curriculum we use also helps students learn how to open their own business. We have had over 800 students. 32 came back to study to become instructors, 5 have been instructors here at SSI, and about 25 have opened their own business. Many have worked with their families.”

With October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the school will offer free nail application for pink nails, and a buy one, get one free manicure. Annual deals and packages include Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day, and Holiday packages during the month of December. Throughout the year, free haircuts are given to any person in law enforcement, including police officers, EMS workers, ICE and military veterans. Clients need only mention their line of work in order to be added to the system. Senior citizens receive 15% off.

For interested future students, a discount is given to anyone who is registered before October 31st. Martha Mejia, an SSI student since March, gushed, “I like everything about this school, and I have great instructors.” Hours of the Salon & Spa Institute are Tuesday–Friday, from 10:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m. For more information, please contact them at (956) 541-3330, visit their Facebook page or their website www.ssi.edu.
